The age of complacency

It is often said that NUS students have far lackluster performance when compared to their NTU and SMU counterparts during interviews. Of course, let's put aside the creme de crop, because, afterall, the stakes are higher when it comes to the average masses.

"DO NOT REST ON YOUR LAURELS"
the career advisors from NUS warned.

NTU students are praised for their humility and sincerity. SMU students rise above for their soft skills, which are highly demanded in commerical jobs such as banking, and are deemed more confident, eloquent etc. Word has it that the institution also has a strong and foresightful career advisory fort, enabling >80% students to secure jobs at least 1 month after graduation.

Now, what has NUS to offer? A longstanding tradition on education based on solid theory based foundation. Good ground work, but is that adequate? Employers have commented that NUS students appear arrogant, and tactless.

Ironically, NUS is the longest serving Tertiary institution. Stoic foundation it seems, is her strength as well as her biggest weakness.

It takes more than sheer rote learned knowledge to thrive in the workplace. Attitude, Branding, Confidence and a wholesome packaging to tell the world what NUS students have to offer, is equally important. After 4 years in NUS, i reckon that the institution has still not caught up with that notion. Either that, or that change is slow to capture the bosses out there.

Here's a look at some statistics:
Shell Petroleum Company: As of April 2008, 6 NTU students (chemical engineering) have been gainfully employed. NUS: 0. That's a snub at the old cow, given that NTU is only at it's pioneer batch of chemical graduates.

Take a look at the newspapers. Aggressive branding by NTU, front page advertisement, with the limelight stealing title:

"NTU, where the talents are".

I hardly see such creative and bold approaches from NUS. Our tactic, comparatively, is conversative and modest. Now, what about being complacent? There is hardly any surprise to see that students are "a chip off the old block".

Frankly, i think more can be done by NUS and not forgetting, the students. First, the mindset and the whole focus of the curriculum structure has to change. Students shouldn't be made to overlearn. Also, being "well-known" is really not a reason for us to be rooted in progress.

Move on. And do it fast.

"Being unafraid of failure is one of the most important qualities of a champion".

Sadly, i find this spirit to be hugely lacking in Asian context, where pride, egoism, "what if" and "I can never be wrong" thinking is seen as far more important than accepting not-so-favorable reviews in grace.

Indeed, the older a person, the more this is true. And thus the reluctance to try new things, for the fear of failure. It's a pity.

As for me, I am still learning the philosophy behind the message.

Lifts.

Yes, let's talk about lifts today. Our amazing invention which has allowed many to live high high up (in our homes) without having to sweat and pant all the way up there.

So, when is it that the lift will not be used?
(a) When it breaks down (duhz).
(b) When it becomes a sewage corner.
(c) By acts of inconsiderate people.

I happen to come across lifts that were due to (b) and for Mr Soh, both (b) and (c).

Scenario (c):
Mr. Soh waited for a long while for the lift. But it was constantly at the 4th floor. There weren't signs of work nor neighbour moving house. Puzzled and irritated (you most probably would feel that way), he climbed to the 4th floor.

There were 2 malays "hogging" the lift. One stood in the lift, the other stood by the door, happily chatting away. Perhaps their sense of urgency differs from the mass public huh.

Soh looked at them, they looked back. Either they are in total oblivion to their inconsideration, or they just carry out their daily lives in such unbashness and audacity.

That being said, let me present to you 2 course of actions.
(i) Keep staring, or tell them about their inconsideration, but risk getting a non-amiable response, e.g. argument or a fight, especially since they are non-chalent and think that they have every right to do what they deem fit.

(ii) Pretend that you saw a pair of retards, and walk away. Then help "spread" the word about the 2 model citizens to everyone else.

The older generation would advise you to practice (ii). In chinese, they call it 明哲保身. In today's society, this may be termed cowardice. Which would you choose?

I would say, probably i will say something, provided i know them well enough.

Scenario (b):
Brownish polka dot designs splatter outside the lift landing, within the lift, and on the floor, with a pungent smell perpetuating the every corner of the void deck. You might think that it was a dog. But apparently not. The amazing thing was that the 2 lifts which were decorated were FAR apart from each other, like stand alone lifts in the same block.

You get my idea.

Maybe that person buay tahan and decided to share his/her agony with everyone else in the same block. But I thought that maybe the artist could have chosen a healthier spot to shit, say the bushes if it was really really really unbearable. At least the plants could have some nutrients...Pity the cleaner, residents who bore the brunt of his/her act. But then again, such things are hard to say. Perhaps a CCTV could tell the story better- whether to emphatize or shame the person.

Computer rebirth part II

As one can see, my blog titles do not make much sense. So, i do not like to include titles. This is in total agreement with my life philosophy =)

After i reformatted my computer, I feel less inclined to install adobe photoshop, pisca and the likes. Here's why.

It seems that i am a BIG JINX to phones. My first not-so-backward phone, Sony Erission T630 slipped into a coma and short circuited when i dropped it into a puddle of water. My current phone, same brand, model W850i started to reject incoming calls and kept hanging itself after i used it to listen to radio one fine day.

WELL DONE DUDES
=.=

So, no photos, no talk. Simple.

haiz. 1 less leisure activity- taking candid photos of people caught in the midst of their spastic acts :( Till october perhaps, when my contract ends.

Reformatted my C drive after such a long procrastinaton. And huala~ My cd writer is working like before! Guess i spoilt it by tweaking with my registry the previous time. All thanks to the recycle virus. ARGH!

But then, when i tried blogging, i realized i changed quite a few options just to get to this page. Er...hope i did not overdo it~

And, i m currently trying to triumph over my cough n running nose n get rid of the phlegm which builds up faster than rabbits multiplying..

Watched Ironman this evening. CGI was chic. Action was good. Heehee...but i still love my Bumblebee from Autobots (Or autobutts, as cousin yao calls it =) )

Several good movies coming up. Wanna watch Get Smart.. and this.. and that...

Mom's getting a little loony nowadays, trying to seek attention as though she was a growing baby..

Clothes in my house is building up, as high as mount everest. And, the stuff in my house also doesn't obey the conversation of mass. Only new things come in, seldom are the older ones thrown out. I have a very bad maths problem here. Haiz... can any budding scientist help me out?

You know, someone wrote to the newspaper to complain about salesgirl speaking to her in Mandarin and lamented how "unprofessional" it is. Then, to cover her backside, she said it wasn't because mandarin is inferior, but she feels that customers like her and everyone else, who doesn't know a lot of chinese, should be served in English. Excuse me, i beg your pardon. I do not see how "unpro" it is to converse in Mandarin. In my humblest opinion, i think that it is ok to converse in mainstream languages apart from english. There may be people who do not understand english, just as there are people who do not understand chinese, for that matter. If i were her, i would simply express my preference for speaking english. If she was so affected, she could probably consider migration than make a ruckus out of it.

Frankly, i think it is a pity that as an ethnic chinese, you know nuts about your own language, and chooses to condemn it. I relish the chance to understand more about my roots, culture. It gives me more meaning to my existence as one, and allows me to share my experiences with people from all walks of life =)

Seatbelts in Minibuses...

"Minibus collision results in 1 fatality and serious injuries.."
"Minibus collision causes bone fracture.."
"LTA to implement laws.."
"Why were seatbelts not made mandatory?"

Very unfortunate, however, crying foul will only add to the misery the parents of the victims..Let us focus more on what's necessary, then act on it.

But, by incorporating all inanimate means = ensure the same desirable end?

Once upon a time, there was a poet. He had wisdom, fortunes, looks, fame... He wrote beautiful poems, ever so mesmerizing that makes many in awe of his success. One day, an angel bestowed upon him the most beautiful and virtuous wife. Another day, the angel returned. Not satisfied, the poet asked for more to make his life even more beautiful...

The angel obliged, by taking away all the things he had- His wife, his wisdom, his everything... 2 weeks after, the angel came back and saw the devastated poet. This time however, she returned him all that he once possessed. Another 2 weeks lapsed and the angel visited the poet again. This time, he was extremely thankful for all the things in his life..

Moral of the story: Our happiness is more often than not, already in our possession. Learn to cherish, and life will be a gift...
~~~~~~~~~
Yes..Life is to be appreciated. Which is why, after 4 GOOD MONTHS of hard work & countless sleepless nights, I cannot help but show everyone our group's fruit of labour:
And our precious eyebags ^^
One day after my last undergrad paper =)
And, I have come to an end after 4 years of hard core theory and rote learning.
Should i be happy, or sad?
One day, while i was studying, i came across some vandalism.
Vandalism is bad. But it can be entertaining...
Here's the message scribbled on it:
(Read:
我讨厌读书!!!
我就不一样。我爱死书了!!!
That's because you're a FREAK! Ya I agree)
Guess those people got a little wired up somewhere...
-----------------------------
And so, i was talking about this pair of stingy couple who did not want to pay for the parking on saturday right?
This is how it goes.
Usually, Saturday parking is free after 12 pm (i think) in the past. Either that, or you come before 8am, and it is free. But ever since the school decided to outsource the parking system, the parking fees went outrageously high (or rather, people had to start paying). So it was, that fine Saturday at 7.15 pm when the hungry couple decided to call their hell training a day. When they discovered...
And indeed they were, gloating at us.
The school is very smelly...
Can you guess what i was thinking? Heehee...
Yupz. That's how bored we were during the wait.
And the gantries finally lifted their lofty head at 7.45 pm =)
That's the extent people would go to save $2+ and beat the inflation while still jobless!
